With all the rain we’ve been getting in Marietta lately, it seems very uncharacteristic for the summer season. The rainy weather we’ve been getting is bringing in a lot of moisture and humidity. And that can lead to something dangerous – mold.
In this report from WCNC, there was a town hall in nearby Waxhaw that was shut down due to severe health concerns because of mold:
A mold problem shut down Waxhaw Town Hall, and employees have been relocated out of potential health concerns.
The mold and moisture is on walls, floors, wood, ceiling tiles and air vents, official said.
“It was more prevalent throughout the building than we initially realized,” said Waxhaw Mayor Daune Gardner.
Crews in white suits already cleaned much of it up, but some offices within the building are still sealed off with blue tape. A sign on one of the doors says ‘Area 51’.
The culprit is worn-out metal leaving gaps in the roof where water soaked in.
According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, if mold contamination worsens, it can pose severe health risks due to the environmental contaminants it releases into the air, which may cause allergies, asthma attacks, or other health conditions.
The mold problem at Waxhaw was caused by gaps in the roof where water soaked in. Preventing its growth in the first place is the best way of avoiding potential health risks. And the best way to do so is with routine maintenance and repair of your roof.
