You don’t see it very often and you wouldn’t otherwise know it’s there, but attic insulation plays a key role in your DeKalb home’s health, energy efficiency and your comfort. Aside from climbing into your blazing hot attic, there are other ways to tell if your attic insulation isn’t performing.
Signs That Your Insulation Has Lost Its Muster
- Temperature differential between rooms. If the attic is lacking insulation, it will lead to uneven temperatures in the various rooms of your home.
- High energy bills. Insufficient, damaged or old insulation causes the temperature in your attic to rise because the insulation can no longer do its job to keep heat out. As a result, your air conditioner will run longer and harder to compensate for the rising heat.
- A noisy home. Insulation doesn’t just keep heat out of the home. It also acts as a sound barrier, keeping street and area noise from affecting your daily activities. If you’re noticing an increasingly high noise level in your home, and you can hear neighbor’s conversations, mowing or other activity, it may be time to check the insulation.
- Drafty rooms. In colder weather, cool air infiltrating the attic affects the condition of your living spaces, too.
What Else Can You Do?
Seal air leaks at the same time that you upgrade insulation, and you will notice also better control over humidity, lower energy bills and improved comfort. You see, if hot, humid outdoor air can infiltrate the attic, it will raise the temperature there, which affects the temperature of your living space. Moist air in the attic also wreaks havoc on the health of the structure. Humidity can lead to mildew and mold growth and a rotting structure.
