Do You Have Atlas Chalet Shingles? What You Need to Know

Not all roofing materials and roofing companies are created equally. Atlas Chalet Shingles were once the most popular shingle used on homes in Georgia, according to a report from Fox 5. Although affordably priced, the shingles looked expensive, which added to their appeal.

Unfortunately, for many homeowners, Atlas Chalet Shingles didn’t live up to the hype. A few class-action lawsuits have been filed against the company, claiming that the shingles are easily damaged by moisture and that they contain gas bubbles that cause them to expand and crack in high temperatures. The manufacturer hasn’t admitted the shingles are defective, but it did discontinue them in 2010.

What’s the Problem?

If Atlas Chalet Shingles aren’t for sale any longer and no roofing companies are using them, what’s the big deal? For starters, many homes in Georgia still have these shingles on their roofs. Since the shingles are discontinued, you can’t just trade in a few damaged ones for new ones. An entire roof replacement is usually in order. But, unless there are clear signs of damage beyond routine wear and tear, insurance companies won’t pay to replace a roof that has these shingles,

Some storm-chasing roofing companies are complicating the situation. These companies go door to door, offering to go up on your roof to “check” for damage. In reality, what they’re often doing is causing damage to the shingles themselves, by bending shingles or otherwise breaking them. These roofing companies will then have you file an insurance claim, even though they actually caused the “damage.” To make matters worse, these companies often make you sign an agreement that states that you’ll only work with them once your insurance approves the claim.

Should You Worry If You Have Atlas Chalet Shingles?

Having Atlas Chalet Shingles on your roof doesn’t automatically mean your roof is defective or the shingles have to be replaced. It is possible your shingles aren’t defective and they won’t break. If you don’t see any clear signs of leaking or damage inside your home or on the roof, you likely don’t have to worry about the shingles.

What Can You Do?

If you do think there is a problem with your shingles, the best thing you can do is call a trusted roofing company like Findlay Roofing. Don’t let any random stranger who approaches your front door up on your roof! You have no way of knowing what they’ll do once up there.
