Roof Shingles: Your Options Defined

There are more choices than you'd think when it comes time to select roof shingles. Asphalt shingles have long been the standard across the country, but other options are just as durable and cost effective. Consider the pros and cons of these roof shingle options when you're ready to replace the roof of your Douglas home.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are a fairly inexpensive option. Choose coated asphalt shingles for an even more efficient roof, as they typically meet Energy Star standards for performance. Three general options exist for asphalt shingles, including laminated, architectural and three-tab shingles, the latter of which is generally the least costly. While an asphalt shingle roof is usually the most affordable type of shingle, it also tends to have a relatively short life span, between 20 to 30 years.

Slate Shingles

Slate is a material popular in the Northeastern area of the U.S. Slate roof shingles are highly durable, lasting as long as 50 years. Many old farmhouses employ slate shingles, and the durable material often stands the test of time, preventing leaks and other common roof problems. Now, synthetic slate shingles are an option for homeowners who don't live near slate quarries; however, the material doesn't last quite as long as the real deal.

Wood Shingles

Wood is a more costly material. Wood shingles offer a pleasing aesthetic for many homeowners, as the look is genuine and natural. Some wood shingles like redwood and cedar are expected to last up to 50 years with proper care and maintenance, making the larger upfront investment worthwhile.

Tile Shingles

A look common to Spanish architecture and homes in the Southwest, tile shingles are relatively expensive to buy. Installing the tiles requires that the roof is able to withstand their heavy weight. However the tiles are also the most durable and longest lasting, offering homeowners who invest in them a life span of 80 years.
